Yvonna Hayes Obituary

Yvonna Lee (Price) Hayes was born July 3, 1934, to Ethridge (Bounce) and Adrienne (Howard) Price in Beaver City, NE. They moved to the Orafino Community in Frontier County soon after.  She attended her first eight years of schooling at the Orafino school and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1952.

She married Richard (Dick) B. Hayes, Jr. at Orafino EUB Church on September 23, 1952.  Dick served in the United States Air Force and they were stationed in Illinois, Texas and California.  After Dick was discharged, they came back to Orafino and farmed for 45 years.  They were very proud that their three children also attended Orafino school and graduated from Cambridge High School.  In 1989 the couple moved to Cambridge and enjoyed town life as much as the farm.

Yvonna was a homemaker, school bus driver, mom and gopher.  She enjoyed sewing and constructed most of her family’s clothing.  She pieced jeans and t-shirt quilts for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved to cook and never turned away one of the boys’ hunting catches for a meal.  Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her delight.  She and Dick spent many a Saturday night dancing at the Elks or Eagle’s lodges in McCook.  They made many lifelong friends there.  They also were permanent members of the Jerry Petersen bus trips to many places in the United States.  She loved being with her friends at coffee time at Shirley K’s and Anew.

During her life she belonged to the Orafino EUB and Trinity United Methodist Churches for 60 plus years. She was an active member of the Orafino Missionary Society, Central Community Extension Club, Stockville Hobby Club, BD Extension Club in Cambridge, Lois Circle at the Cambridge Methodist Church, Coffee Club and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 199.  She also spent many years teaching Sunday School and VBS at both churches.  She and Dick were huge supporters of Cambridge High School activities.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Richard (Dick) in 2015; parents, Ethridge and Adrienne Price; father and mother in-law, Richard (Dick) and Mae Hayes; grandson, Craig R. Nelms; brother and sister-in-law, L. Eugene and M. Eileen Messersmith; niece, Mary Jo Dutton and nephew, Steve Messersmith.

She is survived by sons, David (Linda) Hayes, Goldsboro, NC, Dallas (Teresa) Hayes, Greenwood, NE; daughter, Sue (Dann) Nelms, Benkelman, NE; grandchildren:  Allen (Johnna) Hayes, Curtis Hayes, Wesley (Kerianne) Hayes, Brandi (Justin) Gufford, Tyler (Shannon) Hayes, Brent (Melissa) Nelms, Kelli (Justin) Jensen, Julie Nelms, Laura (fiancée, Steven Boyd) Nelms, Mark Nelms and 18 great grandchildren.
