Robert W. “Bob” Unger, age 73, of Bartley, passed away at the Kearney Regional Hospital on Friday, April 10, 2020. He was born in McCook on May 17, 1946 to Albert and Dorothy (Ventling) Unger. Bob attended and graduated from Bartley High School in 1964. He continued his education at the University of Denver graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Bob was drafted shortly after graduation into the U. S. Army. He served his country in Viet Nam and was Honorably Discharged on December 1, 1974. On February 12, 1972 he was united in marriage to Cheri Ohde in Atkinson, NE. The couple lived in Colorado Springs, CO for a short time and then moved to the family farm near Bartley, NE in 1973.
Bob enjoyed hunting turkey, pheasant, antelope, deer and coyotes. He was a 30-year director for the Ag Valley Coop in Indianola, Bartley. He was a Board member of the Bartley State Bank and a life member of the Bartley American Legion and the V. F. W. Posts. He was known for his wicked sense of humor. He and Cheri were planning on a trip to Alaska this spring, but due to the pandemic had to cancel. He was an avid Husker fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Dorothy; brother, Jim Unger; father-in-law, Harold Ohde; and brother-in-law, Ron Osborne.
Bob is survived by his wife, Cheri of Bartley; three sons, Matt (Rachael) Unger of Queens Creek, AZ, Bert (Kristin) Unger of Lincoln, NE and Joseph Unger of Oberlin, KS; five grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Connie (Ray) Denton of Roca, NE; and sister-in-law, Mary Unger of Grand Island, NE.
Graveside services will be held at the Bartley Cemetery on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 with George Probasco officiating. Visitation will be at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 from 11:00 AM till 6:00 PM. Military Honors will be performed by the Bartley American Legion and V.F.W.
Memorials may be left in Bob’s name to either the Bartley or Indianola Rescue and Fire Departments.
