George Sund, Jr. Obituary

George F. Sund, Jr., age 71, passed away at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Thursday, December 1, 2022.  He was born in Superior, NE on November 14, 1951, to George F. Sr. and Ruby (Kottmeyer) Sund.  George attended Superior High School graduating in 1969.  He attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, graduating with a minor in Criminal Justice and a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management.

On January 8, 1972, George was united in marriage to Ann Baier in Wayne, NE.  After graduation George attended the Nebraska Law Enforcement Academy where he was commissioned by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission as a Conservation Officer. His first assignment was in 1974 in Cozad and later assigned to the Cambridge are in 1977.  George retired from the Nebraska Game and Parks Law Enforcement Division in 2013 after 39 years of service to the State of Nebraska. He was active in the Game and Parks Law Enforcement Division. He was a Certified Firearms Instructor, Field Training Officer, Women in the Outdoors trainer, and Hunter Safety Instructor. In the community of Cambridge, George served as an EMT, on the Airport Board and Library Board.  He was a life member of the NRA, Pheasants Forever, National Turkey Federation, Quail Forever, Mule Deer Federation, and Ducks Unlimited. George received many awards for his service as a Game Warden, Safari Club Conservation Officer of the Year, National Turkey Federation Officer of the Year along with many local awards of recognition.

George worked at the Cambridge Locker to earn his fun money to travel to hunt: alligator, wild boar, elk, deer, turkey, and bear. For he and Ann’s 25th Anniversary they took a three-week trip through Louisiana to New Orleans. For their 30th Anniversary they took a trip to Paris, France.  George loved to go back to Superior to help on the farm with harvest and work with the cattle. George was a true outdoorsman; boating, telling stories and teaching kids hunter safety and mentoring them on hunts of turkey and deer. He loved his dogs. George was an accomplished cook in the kitchen making gumbo, and other specialty dishes.

He was preceded in death by his parents George, Sr., and Ruby; uncles; Fred and Roy Kottmeyer, Dick Sund; and in-laws, Richard and Bess Baier.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Cambridge; son, Adam of Cambridge; sisters, Rosemary (Roy) Anderson of Guide Rock, NE, Sharon (Keith “Kif”) Portenier of Farnam, NE; brother, Jim (Pam) Sund of Webber, KS; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2022 in the Cambridge Community Building at 2:00 PM with Jim Jones facilitating the memorial service. Friends may leave online condolences at lockenour.com. The family will have a private inurnment at a later date. In Lieu of Flowers the family has asked donations be made in George's name for mentor youth hunts or to the State Trap Shooting Scholarship. Please wear casual or camo clothing. Lockenour-Jones Mortuary has been entrusted with arrangements.
