Harold Eugene Light of Cambridge NE, passed away January 10, 2018 at Kearney Good Samaritan Hospital at the age of 82. Harold was born on April 4, 1935 in Goodland, KS to Eugene and Evalyn (Barnes) Light.  He graduated from Sherman County High School in 1953 and he proudly served his country during the Korean War from 1954-1956.

Harold united in marriage Irene Louise Scheopner on January 7, 1961  in Goodland, KS at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.  He earned his bachelor’s degree at Kearney State College in education and taught math and science in Hays Center, NE.  He then became the superintendent at the Ellis power plant and rough necked during the western KS oil boom.  He furthered his career and became a certified electrician where he worked and built numerous projects for Excel and IBP.

His greatest and proudest project was designing and building his family’s lake house at Henry Strunk Lake with the help of his wife, children and grandchildren passing on his vast knowledge of construction, electricity and the ability to believe in your dreams.  Many memories were made as they all helped with his Lighthouse at the Lake.  He was an avid golfer, a passion he shared with many of his kids and grandkids.  He was a member of the “Old Farts League” and the “Rest Home Rowdies”, winning many tournaments with brothers-in-law, sons, grandsons and granddaughters, teaching them how to hit the ball straight and keep it in the fairway.  One of his greatest honors was being selected for the Korean War Veteran’s Honor Flight in March of 2014. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Cambridge, Knights of Columbus Council 7734 and a lifetime member of VFW Post 759.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, Irene, of 57 years, his children Debbie Pickinpaugh and special friend, Lee Hircock, of Kearney, NE,  Mitch and Pam Light of Chase, KS, Steven Light and Dennis Conway of Belchertown, MA, Diane and Chris Rich of Cambridge NE, Eddie and Jenifer Light of Haysville, KS, and Becky and Donovan Redl of McCook, NE.  His family was his pride and joy and Harold leaves a legacy of 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his siblings including Stanley (Kim) Light of Topeka, KS, Sharon (Jim) Bowker of Goodland, KS, Judy (Darrell) Schrader of Goodland, KS and Dixie (Kevin) Marks, of Mount Hope, KS.

Rosary will be Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 7 pm and funeral services will be held Friday, January, 19, at 10 am both held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Cambridge, NE.  A celebration of his life will continue with lunch at the St. John’s Fellowship Hall.  A private burial will take place at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be left in Harold’s name.
